O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm about her performances. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil, who had been always delivering top performances ever since, has always finished in the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol straight away.
